Creating Vibrant, Resilient and Sustainable Communities
for Everyone in Washoe County is Worth Your Support.
We Welcome Your Gift—Large or Small—Today.
Sustainability is the ability of a system or community to function over time efficiently and effectively while balancing the needs of people (present and future generations), profit (our local economy) and the planet (the environment we all share).
Local, private donors established the Washoe Sustainability Fund (WSF) in 2025 to fund solutions that improve the safety, security, health, resilience and financial wellbeing of everyone in Washoe County. The WSF is privately funded, because frankly, there is no alternative.
Why?
Changes in national and state priorities eliminated nearly 100% of support for local sustainability and climate solutions for communities like ours. Meanwhile, our region is getting hotter, air quality is getting worse, storms are becomes more unpredictable and extreme, and energy for our homes is getting less reliable and more expensive. We need to invest in solutions our community needs.
We cannot wait for others to provide the funding to build a resilient and sustainable Washoe County that works for everyone. Now, it’s up to private individuals and forward-thinking organizations of goodwill to pitch in.
Solutions are available…
that provide specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time-based relief for people in Washoe County. We are already moving the needle. Much has been accomplished, but the need is still great.
This is where you come in.
Every dollar invested in the WSF will provide grants to invest in real solutions here in Washoe County — and you can choose where you’d like your investment to go.
√ Cool neighborhoods and reduce urban heat
Expand tree canopy, community forestry, green infrastructure, and shaded public spaces to lower dangerous summer temperatures, improve air quality, absorb stormwater, and make neighborhoods healthier and more livable.
√ Make homes and buildings more efficient (and healthier)
Cut energy waste through weatherization, insulation, and efficient equipment so people pay less for utilities, stay more comfortable, and face less exposure to indoor air pollution from gas appliances and leaky, poorly ventilated buildings.
√ Reduce waste, expand composting, and provide healthy, locally grown food
Replace single-use plastics with circular-economy solutions to send less waste to landfills, reduce pollution, avoid pests and odors, and support healthier soils and local food systems that benefit community health.
√ Grow clean and local energy to cut pollution at the source
Expand renewable and community-based energy like solar power and make it easier and cheaper for households and businesses to plug into clean power so less fossil fuel is burned, improving regional air quality and lowering long-term climate and health risks.
√ Clean up transportation and improve land use for cleaner air and healthier, happier communities
Reduce driving and vehicle emissions by supporting cleaner vehicles, better transit, walking and biking, and smarter growth so people spend less time in traffic, breathe cleaner outdoor air, and face fewer pollution-related health problems like asthma and heart disease.
